Canada Creates 59,000 Jobs, More Filipino Workers Needed for New Positions

Canada is rapidly recovering after a disastrous first quarter as the outlook suddenly seems a lot brighter.

“I think it’s pretty clear that the Canadian economy is going to rebalance over the next two to three years,” said Jeremy Lawson, chief economist at Edinburgh-based Standard Life Investments.

“You’ve been through a period where the high level of oil prices and the strong investment in that sector — particularly being reflected in the strong growth of Alberta — is unwinding,” he said. “So Ontario, where a lot of that import-competing manufacturing and non-oil related manufacturing is located, is certainly going to improve relative to Alberta.”

The jump in May employment was the best performance since October 2014, when 62,200 more people found work. The previous big gain was 93,000 in April 2012, the federal data agency said.

Last month’s net new job total surpassed economists forecast for an increase of about 10,000 positions.

Most of those new jobs created during May were in Ontario, with 43,900, followed by British Columbia, at 30,600. Nova Scotia gained 3,700 workers. POEA office  also experienced an increase of job posting from agencies that caters Canadian companies.

At the time of this writing, there are hundreds of Canadian employment positions available in POEA website. The jobs includes welders, machinists, pipe fitters, machine operators, saw fillers,  grocery attendants, maintenance technicians, food counter attendants, cooks, farm workers, painters, industrial meat cutters, assemblers, warehousemen, truck drivers, kitchen crew, instrument technicians, mechanics, pharmacists, carpenters, and shift managers.

Although Canada suffered a first quarter increase in unemployment rate, economists said the country still have a very large backlog on skilled workers and need foreign workers to fill the void.

Filipinos who are interested to apply for the above positions are suggested to go directly to the Philippine Overseas Employment Office (POEA), or to accredited agencies posted on POEA websites that lists the specific jobs.

POEA once again remind all applicants to be wary of fake recruiters who solicit unspecified amount as processing fees.

Placement Fee Policy for New Zealand

New Zealand is a no placement fee country. Based on POEA Memorandum Circular 09-2014 dubbed as Placement Fee Policy for New Zealand, manpower Agencies should not collect recruitment and placement fees from OFWs bound for NZ.

According to immigration.govt.nz, the New Zealand Wages Protection Act 1983 does not allow employers or recruitment agents to receive premiums like costs of employment or placement fees from newly hired workers. NZ Law however allow other fees such as immigration and visa fees, licensed immigration advisers fee, which will be shouldered by the workers.

Since July 2011 until October 2014, the New Zealand Immigration has approved 1806 temporary work visas for Filipinos for the rebuilding of Canterbury.

Canada is a No Placement Fee Country

In a POEA News released dated December 14,2014, Philippine Overseas Employment Agency Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac told that licensed recruitment agencies are not allowed to charged recruitment or placement fees to OFWs bound to countries that prohibit collection of such fees. Agencies found charging placement fees to Filipino workers bound to ‘no placement fee countries’ will experience license cancellation.

Canada, including United States of America (H2B visa), New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Netherlands prohibits collection of placement fees.

Cacdac advised OFWs to report to their official Facebook page those agencies that collect placement fees to ‘no placement fee countries.’

UK Needs at Least 2,640 Pinoy Nurses, DOLE Said

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday noted that UK is requesting at least 220 Filipino nurses every month this 2015.

DOLE chief Rosalinda Baldoz said the requirement was indicated in the report submitted by Philippine Overseas Labor Office in London.

“(T)wo UK-based foreign placement agencies acting on behalf of three National Health Service (NHS) Trusts submitted for verification of the (POLO) job orders for a total of 220 nurses this January 2015,” Baldoz said.

Philippine Labor Attache Joan Lavilla said the nurses will be needed in the fields of cardiology, critical care, cardiac surgery, cardio thoracic, coronary care and catheter lab, and theater practitioners.

The qualified and lucky nurses could enjoy salaries that will range from £21,478 (P1,455,074.04) to £27,901 (P1,890,251.06) a year.

“The demand for Filipino nurses is expected to continue in the following months, given that most UK employers prefer to source nurses from the Philippines,” Lavilla said.

Lavilla noted that one of the manpower agencies that accept applicants is Philippines, Greenfields International Manpower Services.

She said applicants need to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of UK, which includes attaining an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 and passing the two-part competency examination composed of computer-based multiple choice examinations and the practical objective structured clinical examination.

Meanwhile, Baldoz reminded applicants to only deal with legitimate and POEA-registered agencies.

“Employment scams are everywhere and many Filipino are losing money every month due to these scams so everyone must be cautious,” Baldoz noted.

Qatar Needs 90K+ More Overseas Filipino Workers

Qatar is in hiring spree as it prepares to host the 2022 FIBA World Cup. The country has ordered 78,426 Filipino workers from Philippines according to POEA chief Leo Cacdac.

Hussein bin Youssef Al-Mulla Al-Mulla, Qatar’s Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs has informed the Philippine Embassy in Doha that there are more than 94,000 visas reserves for Filipino workers alone, the Philippine delegation said during a meeting on February 4 to 5.

POEA chief said that most job opportunities for OFWs are in health, construction, services, and manufacturing sectors.

Qatar Ministry of Labor reminded the Filipino applicants that Article 33 of the Qatari Labor Law prohibits the payment of recruitment fees. He also noted that applicants should only deal with legit employment agencies.

Cacdac also said that the POEA will create more precautionary measures to stop illegal recruitment.

“Illegal recruiters will see this as the best opportunity to scam people so we are reminding everyone to check our office first before dealing with any recruitment agency”, Cacdac said.

Qatar has 1.6 foreign workers including OFWs, Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese, and Brazilians.

However, there are reports of modern slavery and workers abuse in Qatar. Qatar is also said to be finishing the draft law to protect household service workers (HSWs). At present, HSWs are outside the jurisdiction of Qatari labor law.

Reuters reported that 29,400 people are working as slaves, forced labor, and working without pay.

10 Underrated Jobs that Pays Better than Your Exhausting Call Center Chores

Side Note: The purpose of this article is to tell the readers about other money making opportunities around. Whether the people mentioned here became successful or not in their chosen career, it depends on individual’s education and financial management system. There are some who succeed and there are some who failed. The facts from this article is not from Internet but rather from personal and neighbor’s experiences. 

Many of us today are aiming to work in BPO because we believe that call center jobs pays higher than the minimum wage set by the government. Yes, it’s true. A level one call center agent can earn from 12K to 20K a month depending on the company and the location of the BPO.

In Metro Manila, most call centers offers at least 18,000 pesos per month. In CALABARZON region, a level 1 agent can earn from 12,000 to 16,000, while in Cebu, Bacolod, and Iloilo, a call center agent can earn at least 9,000 a month.

Working in call center is truly rewarding, but the physical and mental stress associated with it is also exhausting. You go to work at 12 midnight and listen to irate customers for the next 8 hours – this is what most call center agents do especially in technical support, billing, and collection accounts.

Anyway, for people who enjoy doing so, there is no question for success. Many professionals find their career path in BPO industry. Supervisors and managers in BPO earn much more than people with the same position in other business fields, like in food and housekeeping industry. A call center agent earns higher than McDonalds and Jollibbee managers.

What if you don’t have the ability to speak English but want to earn more than the call agents are earning? Is there any way? Yes, there is. These partially odd and underrated jobs do not need anything but special skills – and of course a little harder face.

10. Tomb Painter and Cleaner / 24,000 to 27,000 a Month
Although this job is seasonal, anyone who does this is actually earning pretty well. I remember 7 years ago when I was working as a Manufacturing Supervisor, one of my operators filed a 2-week unpaid vacation leave. When he returned, I asked him (Cris) what he did. He told me he painted tombs with his uncle for two weeks and earned more than 15,000. That was October 2008, weeks before All Saints Day.

9. Jeepney Barker / Dispatcher 24,000 to 30,000 per Month
If you think those noisy and annoying people at Jeepney stops are just kidding, you are wrong. They may be earning more than your monthly salary. For 5 pesos every jeep every five minutes, Tomy Caguimbal of Tanauan City is earning at least 100 pesos per hour. Working from 8 in the morning until 9 in the evening, he takes home at least 800 pesos a day of coins. He earns more on weekends while regular employees are taking their leave at home.

8. Embalmer / 24,000 to 35,000 a Month
Some funeral parlors need licensed embalmers while other does not care. An embalmer earns at least 800 pesos per corpse, and can prepare two to three bodies in one day

7. Mobile Phone Technician / 27,000 to 35,000 a Month
Being a mobile phone technician does not require any diploma or any formal education. Training is needed though and with continuous experience, one can repair a basic defect in 30 minutes or lesser. Jerry Descalsota of Bacolod City is earning at least 900 pesos a day in 8 hours of work-by-commission in a cell phone repair shop. Freelance technicians who do not share their earnings to employers are earning more.

6. Passenger Jeepney Driver / 30,000 to 35,000 a Month
These people are silent earners. Metro Manila Jeepney drivers are earning at least 1,000 pesos a day. “Mahina ang katawan ko pag uwi ko na isang libo lang kinita ko, pero di maiwasan minsan talagang mahina. Pinakamahina na ang isang libo”, Lito Vergara of Makati said. Lito has been driving Jeepneys for 12 years and already owns 3 jeepneys – all from his own sweat as a driver.

5. Shoe and Umbrella Repair Man 30,000 to 45,000 a Month
“Payong repair sapatos”, this is what they call someone who do this.

4. Handyman / 30,000 to 45,000 a Month
A handyman is someone who does everything from carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, etc. In a middle-to first-class subdivision, a handyman is always needed. A single call to a handyman that will fix your faucet, electrical outlet, or tiles would cost you at least 400 pesos in a couple of hours work.

3. Auto Denter (Latero) / 30,000 to 45,000 a Month
An auto denter or “latero” is someone who repairs the body of the vehicle. A couple of hours of auto denter’s work fixing your car’s fender can cost you at least 500 pesos. A skilled auto denter can assemble the Isuzu Elf’s whole body in 3 weeks for 35,000 pesos.

2. Home Service Massage Therapist / 30,000 to 45,000 a Month
Most massage parlors ask at least 300 pesos for one hour massage. Home service massage therapists are earning more and receiving bigger tips. Elena Gigantoni of Mandalagan, Bacolod City has been earning decent amount for five years in servicing first class subdivisions like Villa Valderama, Santa Clara Subdivision, and Ayala North Point. He takes home at least 1,200 a day for less than 8 hours of home service job.

1. Walking Ukay Vendor / 36,000 to 45,000 Per Month
This maybe your first time hearing this but, this person earns at least 1,200 a day. Although this is actually a business and not a job that pays you to work for others, selling ukay while walking with “kariton” is really rewarding.

Bonifacio Medina of Calamba City has been doing this for seven years and he doesn’t want to do any other things at all. According to him, selling at least 15 pants and 20 shorts a day is easy. Mark-up for each men’s pants is 45 pesos and 32 pesos for each short. Earning at least 1,315 pesos a day while walking at least 10 kilometers is a cool job for Medina.


The above lists of jobs are not for everyone, but if you are doing nothing and want to earn pretty amount of money, the above lists of jobs is worth trying.

“We have some interesting development that has taken place over the last few weeks in terms of the Federal Skilled Workers Program that has been retooled to make it even more responsive to the Canadian need and make it clear and transparent to persons who want to apply to immigrate to Canada as a Federal Skilled Worker,” he said.

But he said that the first decision to make for the person who is willing to work in Canada is whether he will work permanently or just a temporary foreign worker.

According to Kent, Canada offers four different types of programs—the Federal Skilled Worker, the Federal Skilled Trades Workers, the Canadian Experience Class, and through the Provincial Nominee–that a person can use to immigrate to Canada based on their skills.

1. The Federal Skilled Worker requires at least 1 year work experience, language, and education training according to Kent. There are 24 jobs listed under this type. Among the list of occupations are engineering managers, financial and investment analysts, geoscientists, civil engineers, computer engineers, land surveyors, medical laboratory technologists, cardiology technicians and electrophysiological diagnostic technologists

2. Federal Skilled Trades Program designed for immigrants who are in occupations such as pipe fitters, machinists, welders and mechanics, and other skilled workers with certificates (not necessarily college bachelors graduate)

3. Another way to immigrate to Canada is through the Provincial Nominees. He said provinces have a better idea of what their needs are. This type of program is seldom used by Filipino immigrants.

4. The last program, the Canada Experience Class, is designed for persons who are already working in Canada.

Filipino professionals and skilled workers fall under the first and second category above. The Federal Skilled Trades Program is what most of our skilled workers are chasing after gaining enough local experience and TESDA certificates.

700+ Filipino Nurses Needed in UK, Ireland

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced that the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland needed a total of 739 nurses, and Filipinos are encouraged to apply.

Nurses in the country who aspire to work in UK voiced out concern recently following the killings in Stepping Hill Hospital, where a Filipino nurse Victoriano Chua was found guilty of multiple murder.

“The case did not change the fact the UK still need a lot of nurses from Philippines”, an NHS employee who refuse to identify himself told reporters on Monday.

“This is a worthy career opportunity for our Filipino nurses who want to seek overseas employment,” said Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz in a statement Monday.

Baldoz, in encouraging Filipino nurses to apply, said UK and Ireland employers “provide not only good employment packages, but also, their governments strictly prohibit the charging of placement fee to applicants.”

How to Apply

Baldoz said only applicants who pass the CBT will qualify for the OSCE.

The secretary added that the applicant should contact the POEA office directly and avoid any employment agency to avoid any problem. The POEA will then refer the applicant to the accredited agency.

She said qualified applicants will be granted a visit visa for six months, which will allow them entry into the UK not earlier than 14 days prior to the scheduled date of the OSCE.

In the Republic of Ireland, the hiring of Filipino nurses requires an IELTS score of 6.5. Applicants would have to undergo a nursing adaptation or supervised nursing practice upon arrival in the country before they can register with the Irish Nursing and Midwifery Board and later on work as registered nurses.

In UK, registered nurse receives an annual salary P1,5M to P1.9M, while in Ireland, a nurse can receive P1.42M to P1.7M.
